What is HIRE Me?
HIRE Me is a free career preparation after-school program that provides work-readiness training, career mentorship, service learning opportunities, and career exploration experiences. The program runs one day per week for high school students beginning the fourth week of September through the end of May.
The program will be held on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at YouthWorks and on Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at one of our partnering sites, The Pittsburgh Project.
A total of 50 participating Allegheny county area youth will have the opportunity to obtain certification, participate in and plan a service learning project and become eligible to receive a summer job.
Who is Eligible for HIRE Me?
To be eligible for HIRE Me, youth must meet the following criteria:
- Must be enrolled in an Allegheny County school in grades 9-12
- Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Must be able and willing to commit to weekly after-school program sessions on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
HIRE Me incorporates various career development activities for high school youth:
YouthWorks arranges in-depth visits to job sites for two to four hours in one day so you can see first-hand what a day might be like at your dream career. Learn from professionals in the field and see if you could see yourself in that career. Our Job Shadow program will take place throughout the school year program.

YouthWorks brings in professionals from in-demand careers in southwestern Pennsylvania to help you see the great opportunities that await you if you prepare. You'll learn about salaries and educational preparation for a wide range of jobs in the following "high-growth industries":

- Health & Human Services
- Professional & Technical Services
YouthWorks funds work opportunities at community based organizations and works with businesses in the area to provide first-time work experience. HIRE Me will be a pipeline for our summer employment program. Otherwise, please contact us to be added to our JobBlast e-newsletter for monthly job leads and work-readiness articles.
YouthWorks' own mentoring curriculum, created and piloted in 2012, is modeled after our signature career exploration and job readiness curriculum, JumpStart Success. The mentoring curriculum covers the following topics: Career and Academic Planning, Resume Building and Professionalism, and Career Exploration.
