Job Tour:  National Robotics Engineering Center - Technology
There are over 80 companies in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region that design, sell, or service robots.  Carnegie Mellon University, the governing body of the NREC, has a world-renowned reputation for robotics. NASA, one of the funders of the consortium, has an unparalleled commitment to education.  We will be touring with Norman Kerman and will see a short film and all the robotics including those made for the US Army.

See if you have what it takes to start your own business!  This Cool Hot Jobs Workshop  will feature experts from the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).  Explore your career and educational aspirations while unlocking your entrepreneurial creativity.  Food served.

Are you interested in working outdoors, guiding tourists to local attractions, or conducting recreational activities with groups?  Did you know that you can do this right in your own backyard?  At this workshop, experts from Venture Outdoors will explain how Pittsburgh’s world-class outdoor recreation opportunities are making our region a hot destination for travelers.  Learn about career opportunities and possible summer internships in this exciting and growing field!  Food served.

Cool Hot Jobs Workshop: Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
If you are 16 years old AND love working with animals of all sizes, this workshop is for you!  The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium has over 4,000 animals from around the world right in Highland Park.  After learning about the many fulfilling careers you can have at the zoo (and they don’t all involve working with animals), fill out an application for summer employment!  Food served.

Job Shadowing
For one day in February, you will be matched with someone in an industry that interests you.  Follow that person to meetings, learn about his/her day-to-day work, and get your questions answered.  We will have more than 100 opportunities this year throughout Allegheny County, including: Judges, architects, on-air Dee-jays, journalists, healthcare and many more. The nationally renowned reputation of the Medical Examiner's Office in Allegheny County reflects a continuing effort to effectively assist the administration of justice and to meet the responsibility of investigating sudden, unnatural, and violent deaths in Allegheny County. This tour will be at the new facility.

At the Peter M. Wiser Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER),health care professionals at all career and training levels can perform complex and critical procedures on simulators that are much more than mannequins: they breathe, bleed, cough, and cry.  Tour this world-renowned center to discover a side of health care you never imagined.

The 4th annual Youth Workforce Development Conference, presented jointly by YouthWorks and Urban Youth Action, will be held on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Omni William Penn Hotel. The theme is Bridging the Gap: Pathways to 21st Century Careers. Youth workforce development professionals, educators, community and business leaders, youth and parents are invited to attend.

Youth Employment and Internship Program
YouthWorks helps ensure that youth gain initial work experiences in their communities, which provide supportive environments while also maintaining high standards. These programs enable youth to develop foundational workplace skills while providing them work experiences that include training, career exploration and immediate income. Jobs in Community Based Organizations
YouthWorks provides initial work experiences to youth at community based organizations (CBOs)  right in their own communities. This CBO placement provides a supportive first work environment for at-risk youth while also maintaining high standards and expectations, ensuring that youth gain needed skills and self-confidence. These programs enable youth to develop foundational workplace skills while providing them work experiences that include training and career exploration. (Return to Calendar of Events)

Jobs in the Public and Private Sector
YouthWorks has two approaches to job development. One is done in coordination with the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County East CareerLink Center hubs. The other is to develop internships, which aim to provide youth with career exploration and exposure. Through YouthWorks’ partnership with CareerLink, we have been able to increase job search assistance to youth job seekers. Such assistance includes but is not limited to developing an electronic resume, registering online with CareerLink, and job coaching. (Return to Calendar of Events)


Jump Start Success - Job Readiness Training
Job Readiness Training (JRT) prepares youth ages 16-25 to apply for a number of private sector jobs or to be referred to internships. Participants learn how to prepare a resume, interviewing skills, employer expectations, appropriate workplace conduct, and communicating with employers. This training is free. (See our list of Participating Employers to see which companies and organizations have hired our youth in the past.)

Note: YouthWorks is currently partnering with CareerLink to develop employment opportunities for area youth . In addition to workshops at YouthWorks, future JRT sessions will be held at the Pittsburgh and Forest Hills CareerLink offices. Cool Hot Jobs Workshop Series
Ever wonder, “How much does that job pay?”  How about, “What did that person do to get that great job?”  If so, then check out one of the Cool Hot Jobs Workshops.  You’ll learn about industries in need of workers, like you, and what it takes to land that “Cool Hot Job”!  YouthWorks conducts workshops to provide youth with information on career development, financial aid, college, personal budgeting, & other related life skills and career planning information. Job Tours - Worksite visits
These career voyages provide exposure to various career options, particularly those identified as career clusters in demand within Southwestern Pennsylvania. These career exploration experiences are critical to help youth envision and “see” themselves in a career. Participants will learn important information on the type of educational needed, the details of job performance, and salary expectations. Additionally, this component helps youth gain practical knowledge about careers, enabling youth to test their interests. There is no fee for this service. Job Shadowing
Every February on Ground Hog Day, youth in Allegheny County get a glimpse the careers of their dreams. In conjunction with National Job Shadow Day, YouthWorks provides area youth an opportunity to shadow professionals to give them an up close and personal look at careers to inspire them.
